Your Guide to Staycation-ing Around Atlanta

Like many of us, you may be opting for a staycation in Atlanta instead of traveling out-of-town this year. Or, maybe you’re looking to sprinkle some adventures into your work from home routine.

We want to help you discover the many adventures awaiting you just outside your door. So, we’ve compiled our team’s favorite social-distance-friendly places to explore in and around Atlanta.

Chattahoochee Nature Center

Why we love it: Get in touch with nature and enjoy some quality outdoor time by visiting the Chattahoochee Nature Center. While there, you can explore the Chattahoochee River by canoe, wander on trails through the 127-acre forest, and up your knowledge about the Chattahoochee and the wildlife that calls it home at the Center’s indoor exhibits.

When to go: The Nature Center is open Monday – Saturday from 10 AM – 5 PM and Sunday from 12 PM – 5 PM.

What to see: As a metro Atlanta resident, the Chattahoochee River is one of the most vital resources you have. Not only is it one of the primary sources of your drinking water, but it’s also a beautiful home to a variety of plants and animals. Get to know the river, the important role it plays in your life, and how you can help protect this critical resource by making a stop at the Center’s Explore Your Watershed exhibit.

What to do in advance: To ensure social distancing, the Chattahoochee Nature Center currently requires all visitors to purchase a ticket in advance.

East Palisades Nature Trail

Why we love it: Looking for a convenient escape from the city or your suburb? Make your getaway to the East Palisades Nature Trail to take a break from the daily grind and enjoy a scenic, peaceful walk along the Chattahoochee River. Located in Sandy Springs, the 3.4-mile trail offers breathtaking views of the river and forest.

When to go: Visit any day of the week during daylight hours.

What to see: You won’t want to miss the enchanting bamboo forest found along the trail.

What to do in advance: Bring $5 to pay for parking at the trail’s parking lot.

Starlight Drive-In Theatre

Why we love it: Transport back in time and enjoy a movie from the comfort of your car by visiting this outdoor drive-in movie theatre. Even better, your ticket gets you access to doubleheader films, so you can enjoy movies under the stars all night long.

When to go: It’s open seven days a week, with movies showing at 9 PM and ~10:45 PM.

What to see: On your way to the Drive-In, make a pit stop at the authentic Mexican taco stand El Progresso, located just three minutes from the Drive-In, for some to-go tacos. El Progresso is so low-key that it doesn’t even have a website. But, you can find it on Google Maps.

What to do in advance: Check out what’s playing at the Drive-In the week you want to visit.

Big Creek Greenway

Why we love it: Grab your sneakers, skates, or bike and take a ride down the Greenway path. Located in Alpharetta, the 8-mile travel travels through the woods along Big Creek. You might even be able to spot a blue heron or deer along the way!

When to go: Visit any day of the week during daylight hours.

What to see: Explore the path by bike by renting a two-wheeler from Pedegro Alpharetta. The shop offers everything from road, tandem, and electric bikes, plus bike trailers, so you can bring your kids along for the adventure!

What to do in advance: If you want to rent a bike, call Pedegro (404.281.0264) before you go to reserve your bike.

Lillian Webb Park

Why we love it: Lillian Webb Park offers everything you need for a fun afternoon with your family – from a splash pad to volleyball courts. If you’re looking for a more laid-back adventure, pack a picnic to enjoy on the park’s beautiful 4.2-acre greenspace or under a gazebo.

When to go: Visit any day of the week during daylight hours.

What to see: Check out the three-tiered fountain.

What to do in advance: Pack a picnic to enjoy in the park.

These places just scratch the surface of all of the fantastic adventures metro Atlanta has to offer. We want to know: what’s your favorite staycation spot? Share your favorites by commenting below.
