Expert Panel Offers Glimpse into Atlanta’s Transportation Future

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Perimeter Connects — in partnership with the Urban Land Institute and the Perimeter Community Improvement Districts — recently gathered local commercial real estate professionals, transportation experts, and civic and business leaders to discuss the future of transportation in Atlanta.

According to event speakers, more cooperation between the private and public sectors is on the horizon, with a key role for the local commercial real estate industry.

The event included opening remarks from Georgia State Senator Brandon Beach, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Denise Starling, Livable Buckhead Executive Director, and including Lynn Lewis (Hines), Gerald McDowell (Aerotropolis Alliance), Rhonda Tompkins (Cousins Properties), and Stan Wall (HR&A Advisors).

The biggest takeaway from the panel: commercial real estate asset holders and managers bringing new housing, office, and retail to Atlanta can help mitigate the demand for our roads and streets even as the metro region grows through transportation demand management policies.

Ideas included policies like unbundling parking from leases, subsidizing transit passes, and building transit and trail-oriented development around MARTA stations and the Atlanta Beltline. Rhonda Tompkins, Director of Property Management at Cousins Properties, talked about the importance of educating and promoting alternatives to driving alone. She also highlighted a new step that they’re taking, working with Perimeter Connects to offer free 10-trip transit passes to new tenants as part of their welcome.

The event was a showcase for how leaders and innovators throughout Atlanta are working to improve quality of life while allowing for sustainable growth in our region.

Special thanks to our event sponsors– Central Atlanta Progress, TransitScreen, LAZ Parking, and Seven Oaks LLC.
